A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Your 50-Year Training Plan - the idea that the most important training ramp isn’t the one preparing you for your next race, but the one that keeps you fit, healthy, and moving for the rest of your life.
So, for this episode of MAD Science Meets Real Life, I sat down with Iñaki to take that idea out of the spreadsheet and into the real world.
And Iñaki is a particularly good person to have this conversation with.
When we first started working together almost 20 years ago, before the Ultraman World Championship win and his years racing as a professional, he told me something that stuck with me:
His most important goal was to maintain a good relationship with sport for his entire life.
Nearly two decades later, he’s still doing exactly that.
So this conversation became less about optimizing VO₂max and more about how you actually build an athletic life.
We talk about:
Why maintaining fitness as we age probably requires progressively more movement, not less.
The “Couzens Immortality Quotient” and what an extra 15 minutes per week each year might add up to over a lifetime.
Why your basic week may be more important than your biggest training week.
Looking backwards at what you’ve actually sustained rather than sideways at what everyone else is doing.
Building your life to remove friction from movement.
Why frequency and consistency usually beat heroic bursts of training.
How big athletic goals can actually sabotage long-term development if we push too far from our sustainable baseline.
The importance of protecting the habit—and, ultimately, your identity as an athlete.
And Iñaki’s simple idea of making small promises to yourself and keeping them.
Perhaps the biggest theme of the conversation is that lifelong fitness isn’t primarily a motivation problem.
It’s a systems problem.
Build a life in which movement fits.
Establish a basic week you can repeat.
Add a little.
Keep the promise.
And then do it again next year.
That’s how you build not just a training plan, but an athletic life.
